Everyone loves spring for the warm weather and beautiful flowers, but with it can come severe weather. Living in the Midwest, everyone should have an action plan on what to do if tornado does strike. Follow our four easy tips to ensure you and your family remain safe during any severe weather threats.
- Have a plan
It won’t do anyone any good if people are panicking during an emergency. Identify a room on the lowest floor of your home with no windows that will provide as shelter from a tornado. A storage room in the basement or a small bathroom will work for this purpose. If you live in a high-rise condo or apartment, choose a hallway in the middle of the building or ask the building manager what the emergency plans are.
- Prepare a kit
In the event of severe weather, you may be stuck for quite a while, so be prepared for that. Include a kit with a radio, flashlight, batteries, blankets and maybe something to distract any kids until the warning is over. Keep this kit in your safe room so it is always available when needed.
- Inform the whole family
If you have kids who stay at home on their own, make sure they know what the emergency plan is and what they are supposed to do. Now is also a good time to explain the difference between a warning and a watch and make sure they understand what the tornado siren sounds like. You’ll also want to inform any babysitters, house sitters or nannies of this plan as well.
- Sign up for alerts
You can receive weather alerts by so many apps on your phone that it’s silly to not be informed. Ensure that you are getting alerts from at least one source before severe weather seasons starts. These can be weather apps, news apps or even a weather radio.
