We’re coming up on prime farmers market season in Omaha! The markets around the city are already open to the public on weekends, but in a few weeks the weather will really warm up and fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers will be overflowing the stalls at these local markets. For a first timer, it can be daunting to head over to the farmers market without knowing what to expect. We’re sharing our six expert tips to make your next trip to the farmers market go flawlessly.
1. Order flowers first
When browsing the market, you’ll notice a few tents that have gorgeous arrangements of flowers for sale. If you’re interested, consider stopping there first. Due to high demand, many of those booths have a wait, so if you place your order at the beginning of your trip, they’ll likely be ready for pickup by the time you’re finished shopping!
2. Bring your own bag or basket
If you’re planning on buying anything, bring your own bags to the market. This will make your checkout process go faster and you’ll not use a harmful plastic bag. If you forget to bring a reusable bag, you can purchase them at the Official Farmers Market booth!
3. Shop around for prices
You’ll notice that many booths will sell the same food at different prices. Before committing, check out different booths and look at prices and the quality of the food. You may find someone has something cheaper, but it looks better somewhere else. But, be careful – booths sell out of certain items quickly, so you’ll have to make quick decisions.
4. Ask for taste tests
Wondering if something taste good? Ask the farmer for a small sample! Many places will let you taste their food before buying. They want you to be a satisfied customer, so if you’re nice to them, chances are they’ll be nice to you!
5. Make sure dogs are on a leash
Dogs are totally welcome at the Omaha Farmers Market, but they must be on a leash at all times. We know your pup will be eyeing the booth with all the steak so keep an eye on them and keep their leash taut. When they need to relieve themselves, take them to a grassy area away from booths and clean up after your pooch!
6. Get there early for the freshest produce
We all know the phrase, “Early bird gets the worm!” So if you’re looking for the cream of the crop, try and get to the market first thing after it opens. You’ll have the largest variety of food and flowers to choose from and might even beat the crowds! But, late comers do have an advantage! If a booth is trying to get rid of a certain item, they might be willing to strike a deal!
